Tuesday

Harvesttime is here again. The kitchen garden has provided wonderful food for our supper table. Harry works from dawn to dusk, and he falls into bed at night and sleeps like the dead.

Lately I have found myself thinking about city life. Maybe because I once thought I wanted to go to New York City. What must it be like to live surrounded by tall buildings, living in rooms three, four, or five or more stories above the ground? To never hear the crickets as night falls over the earth? To never smell the air at harvesttime? (There is something about the evening air in late August that I can’t describe but that is so distinct.)

How could I have imagined I would want a life lived among bricks and stone?

I look at Harry with the children and the puppies running around in the yard on a Sunday afternoon, and I know that God gave me the life He intended for me.

“And he that supplieth seed to the sower and bread for food, shall supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness.”

I read that today in 2 Corinthians, and the words tugged at my heart. It is about harvest. It is about this life that is so precious to me.

I am not sure what God wants to say to me through that verse. I just know He is speaking to me and wants me to understand something. And so I will listen until I understand.
